Women in Thoracic Surgery in Japan

The number of female physicians is increasing all across the world, including in the field of thoracic surgery. This profession has been historically dominated by male doctors, since the work is demanding in terms of time and physical stamina.

However, the shortage of surgeons is becoming a serious issue, and it is critical to secure human resources, regardless of gender, in order to maintain high-quality medical care in the area of thoracic surgery.

This society was established in 2006, and is based around these basic principles: “to enhance relationships and mentorships among female and male thoracic surgeons” and “to share experience and knowledge in order to promote and nurture female surgeons’ career and talent.” These principles benefit our members (especially female surgeons), as well as our patients who need surgical treatment for general thoracic and cardiovascular diseases.
